Medium native perennial with white daisy-like flowers May to October. Prefers sunny sites but thrives on most soils.
Other Names: Marguerite, Moon Daisy, Dog Daisy
Distribution: Native perennial throughout England and Wales, rarer in Scotland.
Habitat: Grows on most moderately good soils in grassy areas. Prefers sunny sites.
Description: Height is 30 to 45cm. It flowers throughout the summer from May to October. The flower heads are solitary having an outer ring of white ray florets surrounding a central golden button and may be up to 5cm in diameter.
Folklore: An extract obtained by boiling the flowers was used in salves and medicines in earlier times. It was thought to cure a variety of ailments including diseases of the chest and liver. Juice from the stems was used as drops for runny eyes.
Wildlife: The nectar in the flowers attracts butterflies and bees.
